What is a Thinking Tree?
When I was little, there was a cherry tree outside my apartment in Princeton, NJ. The story goes that one day, my mum found me sitting in the branches. When she asked what I was doing, I replied, "Thinking! This is my Thinking Tree." From then on, the Thinking Tree became my haven. It was the place I would explore and invent madcap adventures with my friends. It was a comforting place I could go alone to read books or write stories. It became my home away from home; no matter where in the world I lived, if I came across a cherry tree, particularly when pink blooms filled the sky, I felt safe and welcomed. A “thinking tree” became a sort personal code word for a space of relaxation, inspiration, comfort, and safety - the type of environment I strive to create at Thinking Tree Massage.

Do I need to be completely undressed?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, if you are more at ease and relaxed while still wearing some clothing (ie undergarments, tank tops, or shorts), that’s entirely up to you!

Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

What will the massage or bodywork feel like?
This varies, depending on the type of work requested. On one end of the spectrum, massage can be light, soothing, and relaxing, or it can be deeply focused and specific. Sometimes deep tissue work can be intense, but MASSAGE SHOULD NEVER BE PAINFUL! If you experience pain or discomfort during your session, please tell me immediately so I can adjust the technique or pressure.

What should I do during the massage session?
Prior to the massage, feel free to ask me any questions you have about the upcoming session. There is no such thing as a silly question! I would much rather you have all the information you need to feel comfortable. During the massage, allow yourself to relax. From time to time, I may gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Most people just close their eyes and rest; some even fall asleep! The important thing is to always communicate with me if you are ever too cold, too warm, or a technique is uncomfortable. You certainly don’t have to stay silent for your session, but please don’t feel like you have to keep a conversation going, either!

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. This is why, when you visit Thinking Tree Massage for the first time, you will fill out a health history form. It is very important that you inform me of any health problems or medications you are taking - especially if anything changes as we continue to work together.
